Types of Pool Table Felt

The game of pool dates back to the 1500s and 1600s. Since the beginning, pool table felt has provided a smooth, even surface for uniform spin by the rolling billiard balls. Classification of the different types of pool table felt is possible through the different brands that market pool table felt. Each manufacturer creates different cloth blends for their brands of pool table felt.

  1. Material

    • Pool table felt is made from blends of wool and nylon, for durability. The different types offer different percentages of blends. One brand may be a blend of 30% nylon and 70% wool, while another blend may be 85% wool and only 15% nylon. The use of nylon prevents the felt from showing signs of wear as early as if the felt were made solely of wool.

    Simonis

    • The Simonis brand has been producing felt for more than 200 years and offers numerous felt fabric blends. The Simonis 860 and 300 are both blends of 10% nylon with 90% wool. Simonis 860 comes in 18 different color choices while the Simonis 300 only comes in two different colors. A high resistance version of the Simonis 860 is made of 71% wool and 29% nylon. Another felt model by Simonis, the 760, is a 70% wool and 30% nylon blend offered in 17 colors.

    Championship

    • The Championship brand is another very popular brand that offers more than one type of pool table felt. The types are distinguished according to the ratio of nylon to wool in the felt's blend. The Ultra, Ultra Teflon, Invitational, Invitational Teflon, and Titan Brites models of Championship pool felt all boast a blend of 75% wool with 25% nylon. The Titan Brites offers the most color variety with 29 color choices; the Ultra has the least with only five offered colors. The Tour Edition by Championship is a 70 to 30 blend of wool and nylon, respectively, offered in 12 color choices. The Teflon blends are coated in Teflon to provide resistance to stains and spills.

    Less Popular Brands

    • The Velocity Pro brand of pool table felt is a blend of 85% wool with 15% nylon. Velocity Pro is offered in 12 colors. The 865 and 865T models of Mali brand pool table felt are blends of 80% wool and 20% nylon. The Mali 865T is also coated with Teflon for resistance to spills and stains.

    Colors

    • Originally, the green color chosen for the first pool tables was intended to mimic the green grass playing fields of the popular outside games of the time. Green is still used today, and viewed as most traditional, however many colors are offered today. Some companies may even offer customers the ability to special order distinct color choices to match the décor in the customer's homes.
