The Best Defrag Tool

Over time, your computer's operating speed may slow, causing such inconveniences as increased time to open a large file or to run an application. This usually happens because of the way hard-disk drives store and retrieve information. Defragmentation tools solve this problem by reversing the process of file storage, bringing the system back to its initial speed. Users and experts alike agree that the following three tools are at the top of the list for defrag software: Diskeep, PerfectDisk and O&O Defrag.

  1. How Files Are Stored

    • Imagine your hard disk drive as a pie cut in rings and then slices (sectors). Each slice contains information, such as a file, a part of a larger file or parts of an application. Every time you open a file or run an application, the hard disk needs to locate the exact ring and sector to retrieve the sought-after information. This process takes time.

    Disk Defragmentation

    • As your hard disk fills with information, it becomes harder to find an empty space for storage. Eventually, your computer system will be forced to dissect files and applications and store the parts all over the hard disk wherever it can find an empty spot. This process of fragmentation causes the hard disk to spend more time to open a requested file or an application. Defragmentation software fixes this problem by pulling all of the parts of one file or application together on the disk, thus decreasing the amount of time needed to find and open them.

    Diskeeper

    • Although Windows operating systems come with a standard Disk Defragmenter tool, other, more efficient software programs such as Diskeeper run in the background and do not affect the speed of your computer, so that you can keep working while your computer is getting fixed. The user interface is very friendly and you do not need to think about the defragmentation process once you have started it.

    PerfectDisk

    • PerfectDisk also allows you to work on the computer while the defragmentation is in process. However, you can schedule automated defrags to be performed while the system is idle. This tool can defrag selected files and applications instead of the whole disk, and will give you an estimation of how long it will take to finish the procedure.

    O&O Defrag

    • O&O Defrag comes with more features than most defrag software. You have the option of choosing from five defragmentation processes, depending on what you need to achieve with your hard disk. You can also defrag external, not just internal, hard disk drives. New files and applications get defragmented when the computer is not in use, which makes the information easy to find from the very beginning. The interface is designed for any computer user for convenience.
