Who Wears Wigs?

Wigs serve several purposes. They can be used in fun and entertainment to create vivid character portrayals or spice up Halloween costumes. Wigs may also be a necessary investment that helps to raise the self-esteem in children who are self-conscious about having lost their hair during terminal illnesses or unpreventable hair loss conditions. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Show Business

    • Wigs can be a physically defining piece to completing a "look" for characters that actors and actresses are portraying. For example, in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie series, the long dark dreadlocks helped bring Johnny Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow to life. Wigs are used in all performing mediums, including theater, television and movies. Occasionally, recording artists may also implement the use of wigs in their music videos or live shows.

    Halloween Costumes

    • Many Halloween costumes include wigs. Whether you decide to portray a famous figure of pop culture or iconic Halloween characters--including witches--wigs add to the enhancement of your particular desired image. Wigs can be especially helpful if you don't already have the same hair color of the person you are dressing up as.

    Terminal Illness and Hair Loss

    • One side effect to active chemotherapy treatments for terminal illnesses is hair loss. Children and adults often invest in wigs. In addition, children born with hair loss conditions such as alopecia may opt to wear wigs to prevent the possibility of being teased by classmates.

    Dolly Parton

    • Dolly Parton is possibly the most famous wig-wearer in all of show business. According to an article posted on CBS.com, this prolific songwriter and astute businesswoman has been donning platinum blonde wigs since the age of 19, when she discovered that her own hair was too difficult to work into styles she wanted to wear. It was that same year that she began crafting her now-signature image (complete with big hair, big bosom, long nails and bright lipstick) based on her perception of what a "glamour girl" was.

    Locks of Love

    • Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that accepts donated hair from patrons of all ages. Donated hair is used to make wigs and hairpieces for children under eighteen years old who have been stricken with a terminal illness or born with a hair loss condition. The required length to assemble each hairpiece is ten inches. You can find additional requirements on the Locks of Love official website at www.locksoflove.org.
