Grants for International Students

Funding for international undergraduate and graduate students exists, but grants often are competitive to obtain. Students usually must reside outside of the United State to receive international status, which excludes undocumented students residing in the U.S. but citizens of other countries. When applying for a grant, especially directly from a school, students should submit complete applications as early as possible.

  1. State Department

    • International students from select countries are eligible for a Foreign Fulbright (foreign.fulbrightonline.org ) grant. The grant allows students to study or research in the U.S and is sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Grant requirements vary as each country works with its U.S. embassy or consulate to facilitate specific program requirements. Students also might be eligible for an International Fulbright Science and Technology Award, which promotes doctorate study in select fields such as biology, energy, engineering, physics, math and public health.

    Women

    • Zonta International (zonta.org) aims to support women worldwide. One grant offered by the organization is for women interested in business. Applicants must be either undergraduate juniors or seniors and demonstrate achievement in business-related courses. Another grant is the Young Women in Public Affairs Award, which promotes public or political achievement. Applicants must apply before entering college, with average ages ranging from 16 to 20 years.

    Video Contest

    • The International Student Travel Video Contest (internationalstudent.com/contest) awards students over 18 years old who pursue an education outside of their home country. Video entries must be less than five minutes and describe the student's intended study-abroad trip, though students already studying abroad can describe any trip.

    Eastern European

    • The International Research and Exchange Board (irex.org/programs/grants.asp#top) provides many grants to international students. For example, the Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program promotes graduate study in areas such as in business, economics, education administration, law or journalism. Applicants must be from Eastern Europe or Russia.

    Athletic

    • International students might be eligible for a sports-related grant that allows them to play in the U.S. while obtaining a bachelor’s degree. Athletic grant and scholarship awards primarily are based on student athletic ability. International athletes must meet the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (ncaa.org) eligibility standards. For instance, the NCAA allows colleges to provide athletic funding for select sports, such as cross country, swimming, basketball and fencing.
