Allergic Reactions to Cats

Almost 10 million Americans are allergic to their pets, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), and cats are a common cause of irritation in those with animal allergies. Allergic cat owners may struggle to decide if they should find a new home for their pet, and even if they do, allergens may linger in the home for months. Allergy sufferers without cats may have an allergic reaction after exposure to cat dander on another person's clothes or belongings.

  1. Cause

    • Like other allergies, an allergic reaction to cats is caused by the immune system overreacting to substances that are not actually harmful. According to the AAAAI, cat allergies may be caused by cat dander, saliva and urine. Cats may also carry other outdoor allergens, like mold and pollen into the home on their fur.

    Symptoms

    • If you are allergic to cats, you may have a runny nose, frequent sneezing and a cough. Congestion and sinus pressure may also be present. Your eyes may itch and water, and you may also experience itching of the nose, mouth and throat. A cat allergy may cause dark circles under your eyes, and it is even possible for hives to appear on your body.

    Treatment

    • Avoiding cats as much as possible can help relieve your allergy symptoms, according to Mayo Clinic. Antihistamines, allergy nasal sprays, decongestants and other allergy medications may also help relieve symptoms. Allergy shots may be an option in severe cases. The shots teach your immune system to stop overreacting to a particular allergen, and they may be needed periodically for up to five years, according to Mayo Clinic.

    Choosing to Keep a Cat

    • If you choose to have a cat in your home despite your allergy, there are steps you can take to reduce your exposure to allergens. The AAAAI recommends keeping your cat out of your bedroom. Bathing your cat weekly, especially with an allergen-reducing shampoo, can also help. Using an indoor air cleaner and keeping your home clean and vacuumed can reduce your allergy symptoms. If it is necessary for you to be around cats, ask your doctor if allergy shots may be an option for you.

    Warning

    • Pet allergies can cause severe asthma that is difficult to control in some people, according to Mayo Clinic. If you have breathing difficulties along with your allergy symptoms, talk to your doctor.
