Girl Rocker Hairstyles
Rocker style has a wide range, depending on the persona and attitude of expression desired. Different female rockers have expressed their personal style through makeup, clothes and hair. Musical tastes and inspiration may lead you to mimic or update the fem-rock star who most closely matches your own rocker personality. Does this Spark an idea?

The Gwen Stefani
-
Gwen Stefani has gone through more hairstyles than most, but they've fit her rocker personality. The California native became famous singing in a semi-ska band, No Doubt, which led her to a ska/rockabilly mix of style. Her hairdos often reflected that look of the 1950s.
She would sometimes put her hair up with a high pompadour-type front, half-up 'do with curls in the back. However, there were times when she'd be softer with just soft curls and a '50s housewife dress. There were also times when she would dress more punk, with pink fishnet tights, zippers on her pants and her hairstyle would be multiple buns or braids. A true rocker's hairstyle reflect her music, and since No Doubt went from ska to punk to slow melodic, it's no wonder Gwen's hair also changed frequently.
The Shirley Manson
-
Shirley Manson is most remembered for two things: her smooth, Scottish voice and her vibrant red hair. She probably could have walked down the street without getting noticed, if it weren't for the color of her hair. Garbage was big in the mid-1990s, along with the TV show "Friends" with Jennifer Aniston. Actually, Shirley Manson's main hairstyle was very similar to the "Rachel" cut, based on Anison's character on the TV show. However, Shirley reflected her rocker style through the color of her hair, which she dyed from a natural red to a more vibrant, bright red. Many rockers will combine color with style to enhance attitude with hair.

The Joan Jett
-
Joan Jett made it big in the late 1970s and early '80s, when the mullet hairstyle was also making it big. While Jett didn't technically have a mullet, the similarities are there with her short shag style. The crown of the haircut has the shortest layers, and the hair gradually gets longer, with the bottom thinner and scraggly. A rocker may choose to update the style with side-bangs and, like Joan Jett, hair is usually jet black (no pun intended). Jett's look is coming back with emo style and recently with Kristen Stewart's portrayal in an upcoming Joan Jett movie.
The Avril Lavigne
-
Avril Lavigne is a wanna-be punk rocker who actually sings more pop than rock. However, her desire to appear more rock does extend to her hairstyle, which is very long, very straight and often sports a streak of bright pink or other color. Her hairstyle works for her rocker stage presence because as she moves around on stage jumping, kicking and running, her long locks swing and go wild with her. She's able to use her hair to help her create a rocker persona by head banging and whipping her hair wildly.
The Courtney Love
-
Courtney Love was a grunge rocker in the early 1990s who resembled her husband, Kurt Cobain, in musical style and hairstyle. Her dirty, scraggly, shoulder-length locks put her rocker attitude on display as: I'm dirty, I don't brush my hair and I don't care. Her hairstyle often matched her dirty, torn clothes and pulled together her entire persona. She also went through a phase in the late '90s trying to be more glam. Then she turned to Marylin Monroe for hairstyle inspiration. It didn't last and now she is back to her rocker self, hair included.
