Special Clothes or Costumes for Black History

Costumes for Black History Month can be fun and educational. Keep in mind that people who aren't black should be careful if participating in Black History Month by dressing in costume. A white person should never wear black makeup, because it will look like blackface and will certainly appear to be in poor taste. Most costumes, however, will be appreciated by all races when celebrating black history.

Jackie Robinson

  • The first black baseball player to play in the Major Leagues is still widely loved and respected by sports fans. This is a fun costume because it requires you to dress up like an old-school baseball player. Robinson played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and wore the number 42. If you want to add an accessory to this costume, carry around a baseball bat or glove. And remember to pull your socks up to your knees.

Spike Lee

  • The key to pulling off a Spike Lee costume consists primarily of two items: thick-rimmed glasses and a big baseball cap. It'll be even more obvious if the cap has some association to New York (i.e., Yankees logo, I "heart" NY). You can pretty much wear any other clothes for a Spike Lee costume. In this sense, it's one of the easiest black history costumes you can make. Carry around a video camera if you need to seal the deal.

Tiger Woods

  • Tiger Woods is considered one of the greatest golfers of all time. His look is very easy to mimic because he usually wears a polo shirt (usually red) tucked into slacks. And he almost always wears a Nike cap. If you need to make sure that you're recognized as Tiger, add a golf club to your costume as an accessory.

Bill Cosby

  • One of the all-time great comedians is Bill Cosby. A Bill Cosby costume is accomplished by wearing a big, baggy sweater. A sweater that is loose and baggy with random asymmetrical shapes and colors has fondly become known as a "Cosby sweater." If you're not sure whether people will recognize you as Cosby simply because of your sweater, go to the grocery store and buy some Jell-O pudding that you can brandish about.

Michael Jackson

  • Sure to be a popular costume as a result of the King of Pop's death, a Michael Jackson costume can be one of the most extravagant ways to celebrate black history. The key to this costume is one white glove. From there, a few looks can be attempted: black leather jacket, a red leather jacket or a white dress shirt unbuttoned over a white t-shirt with black pants.
