The Science of Magnetic Therapy

The field of physics is one of many approaches used to understand the workings of the physical environment. Magnetic force is a physical property that is present in every area of nature. The science of magnetic therapy is based on the principles of physics and applied to the workings of the body.

  1. Identification

    • Magnets have been viewed as a source of healing and health for thousands of years. Dating as far back as 23 A.D., Greek and Roman societies documented how this stone held special properties. The science of magnetic therapy is based on these earlier views regarding healing and health. Also known as "magnotherapy," this practice involves applying magnets or magnetic materials to the body. The force contained in the magnet is believed to influence bodily processes and correct any imbalances that may be present. This is considered an alternative form of therapy and has not been accepted as a standard model of treatment for any type of illness or ailment.

    Cellular Energy

    • The physical world depends on electromagnetic fields to sustain the functions that take place inside living organisms. As living beings are made up of a conglomeration of cells and systems, each cell relies on a certain degree of centrifugal force to keep functioning. This is apparent in how an electron must rotate around its nucleus to generate the energy provided by the atom. These atoms are what cells are made of. The practice of applying magnets directly to the body is believed to influence how cells generate energy through the body.

    Electromagnetic Fields

    • Electromagnetic fields are made up of electrical currents and magnetic forces. The earth and the human body both contain these fields. Magnetic therapy practitioners work to align the body's electromagnetic fields with that of the body's to affect balance within the body's system. As the body is made up of a series of electrical impulses, magnets are believed to influence how these impulses are conducted. The balance of energies, or fields, within the body are said to play a part in how well the body functions.

    Effects

    • Magnet therapy is used to treat a number of ailments, some of which include fatigue, high blood pressure, arthritis, and inflammation or pain. Based on the science involved, magnets help improve cell function by speeding up metabolism processes within the cells. This happens as a result of improved signal processing within and between the cells and systems in the body. Improved signal function provides needed oxygen supplies throughout the body. Overall improvement is a gradual process that works to balance the body as a whole system.

    Magnetic Resonance Imaging

    • The science of magnets has been put to use within the medical field in the form of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRIs are diagnostic devices used to create images of internal body processes. These devices work by picking up the electromagnetic energies contained inside soft tissue. Once these energies are recorded, the device is able to create a visual representation. Other diagnostic tools which record the body's electromagnetic energies are electroencephalograms (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG).
