Job Description for a Medical Technician
Medical technicians are employed in various areas of the medical field. Medical technician includes such career titles as emergency medical technician, surgical technician and dialysis technician. Medical technicians are required to have a high school diploma or GED, along with certification and appropriate training for the field. Medical technicians are educated in nursing, with additional study in a particular field.

Cardiovascular Technicians

A cardiovascular technician may have one of three distinct job responsibilities. A cardiovascular technician may be employed to perform echocardiograms on patients and unborn children to monitor the heart's rhythm. A cardiovascular medical technician also monitors venous structures throughout the body, analyzing blood flow and detecting blood clots. A cardiovascular medical technician also assists in heart catheterizations.
Dialysis Technicians

Medical technicians working in dialysis centers are trained to operate the equipment used to perform dialysis treatments. Aside from operating dialysis machines, the dialysis technician writes reports on patient progress and monitors the success of the dialysis treatments. In certain situations, a dialysis medical technician will work outside the dialysis center in hospitals or in the homes of the dialysis patients.

Emergency Medical Technicians

An EMT may be employed by a hospital, ambulance service or fire department. The EMT's job is to offer immediate medical care in emergencies such as a fire, explosion, car accident or a person having a heart attack. EMTs assist in the emergency transportation of patients to hospitals and may have to perform CPR or defibrillations to keep patients breathing and with their heart beating during the trip to the hospital.
Medical Lab Technicians

A medical lab technician performs laboratory testing. Independent medical labs hired by doctor's offices and hospitals, often employ medical lab technicians. While nurses may perform some jobs of a medical lab technician, in order to become a professional medical lab technician an individual must receive advanced educational trainings. Medical lab technicians will not only test blood samples for sugar, but urine for pregnancy hormones and tumor samples for cancer cells.
Radiology/Ultrasound Technicians

Often called an "X-ray tech," a medical technician employed in the ultrasound or radiology field is responsible for obtaining various images of the body by using ultrasound and radiology technologies. Medical technicians in this field may perform X-rays of bones or organs, CAT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds of unborn children. Medical technicians of this type usually specialize according to the type of ultrasound and radiology testing they perform most often.

Surgical medical technicians assist in surgeries, while dental technicians assist dentists in dental surgeries and other dental procedures. Medical technicians in the pharmaceutical field assist pharmacists in packaging and preparing medications for patients.
