Sony decided to go the LCD route, instead of plasma, and advanced in the market and competition features. Sharp's LCD could be the right choice, but for the most part, Sharp's reputation for quality is not what it was when it was ranked best by "Consumer Reports." The sound on Sharp TVs is weak and produces only two watts of power. The picture is fine and detailed but the blacks are not true, looking almost purple or washed out black-gray. Sharp prices are competitive but still land on the higher end of the product's range. Most Sharp TVs offer 60Hz or 120Hz. Some upper-end models will give you 240Hz, allowing amazing viewing of sports and action media.

The Sony is normally rated the best TV by Consumer Reports. Sony may be a bit more expensive but worth the price difference. With a Sony, you will get better speakers and less motion blur. The larger TVs operate at 60, 120, and 240 mega hertz (kHz). The higher the hertz the better viewing for sports and action programming. Also, with Sony you will get more inputs, as compared to Sharp, to hook up your DVD, gaming systems, cable or satellite connections.

Ask the sales associate to show you a side by side comparison of the two manufacturers. When both TVs are next to each other, the differences are noticeable in picture and sound. Make sure that the TVs are hooked up to the same picture source. Also, if one TV is more expensive, work with the salesman to get a better price on your favorite TV. Often, the lighting and the noise in stores produces a bad environment for listening and viewing. Take your dimensions with you and look at the bottom of the sales case or ask the salesmen for height, width and weight specs. Bring a measuring tape with you to see what will fit in the space that you have at home.
