Thiazide Side Effects
Thiazide is a type of diuretic drug used to produce diuresis, which increases urinary output and removes fluid accumulation in the body. These diuretic drugs are commonly called "water pills." Thiazide diuretics are also used to treat hypertension. Bendrofluazide is the most commonly used thiazide diuretic. Some other thiazide diuretics include clopamide, xpanide and metalozone. It's best to know the function and side effects of any medication you take including Thiazide diuretics.

Function
-
Thiazide diuretics are effective in decreasing (edema) fluid retention in the body, such as swelling in the hands, ankles and feet by stimulating the kidneys to expel more urine from the body. Thiazide diuretics also relax the blood vessels, causing them to dilate, which helps to reduce blood pressure. Thiazide diuretics are best taken in the morning rather than at night because there will be some increase in visits to the bathroom.
Side Effects
-
Most people tolerate thiazide diuretics very well, but there are side effects. These include light-headedness and dizziness, along with blurred vision and weakness. Take caution when getting up from a lying or sitting position. As your body adjusts to the medication, these symptoms should go away. There may be loss of appetite, stomach upset, nausea and vomiting along with muscle cramps. Contact your doctor for advice if these symptoms persist.
-
Other Side Effects
-
These include skin sensitivity to sunlight and an increase in blood glucose levels, so diabetics taking thiazide diuretics will have to monitor their blood glucose level closely. There may be an electrolyte imbalance in the blood (low levels of blood chemistry such as sodium, potassium and magnesium and high levels of calcium). Your doctor may take laboratory tests to evaluate and correct your blood levels.
Additional Side Effects
-
If there is an uncorrected electrolyte imbalance, there may be symptoms of weakness, confusion and in few instances an abnormal heart rhythm. Thiazide diuretics may also impact gout sufferers by bringing on a gout attack. There may also be episodes of temporary impotence while taking this medication. Contact your doctor for advice for these symptoms.
Allergic Reaction
-
An allergic reaction is a serious medical emergency; the symptoms may include a rash, hives and itching. There also might be swelling of the face, including the mouth, tongue and throat, along with shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical attention for any of these symptoms.
Precautions
-
Discuss your medical history with your doctor before taking Thiazide diuretics. It's important to discuss any allergies you may have, particularly to sulfa drugs. Do not take this medication if you have an allergy to it. Discuss any medications you may be taking, including over-the-counter drugs, to avoid drug interactions. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or planning to get pregnant while taking this medication.
