Therefore, some have charged that coffee is responsible for a variety of health complications and problems. However, not all charges against caffeine have proven true; in fact, further study has proven some increased health benefits to caffeine and coffee intake.

Coffee's most beneficial component is its antioxidants. Antioxidants have been associated with controlling cell damage. They are also thought to dampen inflammation in the body. In fact, one serving of coffee typically contains more antioxidants than a single serving of several fruits, including raspberries, blueberries and oranges. The presence of these antioxidants offers coffee consumers several health benefits, many of which have been reported in studies described in "The New York Times" (Aug. 15, 2006).

According to Harvard's Women's Health Watch, there are many benefits associated with drinking coffee. Type 2 diabetes is lower among coffee consumers. Coffee also can reduce risk of gallstones or liver damage, discourage colon cancer, and improve endurance and cognitive function. Many consume coffee in order to stay alert; new evidence suggests that spreading out coffee intake through the week can improve alertness.

Although there are signs that coffee may be beneficial, caffeine does affect some cardiovascular functions. It can cause increased blood pressure, a higher heart rate, and even an irregular heartbeat in some consumers. In some cases, it might even raise the risk of heart disease.
Recommended Intake

The average suggested coffee intake two to four cups per day. Some health benefits have been associated with drinking up to six cups of coffee every day. However, intake of over six cups per day can nullify some of the benefits associated with drinking coffee. At the same time, many of the benefits of coffee have not been demonstrated in those who only drink two or less cups of coffee per day.
