The Different Types of Espresso Machines
Many coffee consumers are finding that coffee-shop quality espresso can often be recreated at home. However, with a variety of espresso machines on the market, how do you decide which machine is best? Does this Spark an idea?
-
The Spring Piston Lever Manual Machine
-
One type of manual machine has a spring piston lever. On this model, there is a lever that operates a spring, used to push the water through the coffee grounds. When the water is ready, the user can pull the lever down, "cocking" the machine, and when the lever is released the coffee is poured through the grounds.
The Direct Lever Manual Machine
-
Direct lever machines require the user to be in control of not just the pre-infusion, or how long the water rests over the grounds, but also the pump. This means that the user controls the pressure of the water over the grounds.
-
The Semi-automatic Machine
-
Semi-automatic machines are favorites for many people. They provide automatic controls for water temperature and steam pressure inside the machine. However, they allow for user-controlled pumping. In other words, the user turns the pump on to begin extracting and turns it off to stop the process. If you are picky about when the espresso shot should end, a semi-automatic machine offers greater freedom.
The Automatic Machine
-
Automatic machines are more convenient for most users, because the machine does just about everything necessary for a cup of espresso. Simply fill the basket with espresso, press it down and turn on the machine. The machine determines the pumping time, the temperature and the steam. It stops when the coffee has been poured. However, one disadvantage is that if the machine malfunctions, the user is not able to override the settings.
Other Options
-
Other features vary depending the particular espresso machine. One feature often discussed is the amount of pressure. Some machines boast upward of 15 bars of pressure. However, the best espresso is made at 9 bars, and most machines regulate the pressure to 9 bars. It is also important to make sure the espresso machine includes froth aiders to both heat and froth milk. Finally, watch for buttons on espresso makers that allow users to change basic settings, from steam use to pressure.
