U.S. Military Job Descriptions

The U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard offer long lists of job categories and descriptions associated with careers in the military. Depending on your personal interest in a particular branch of the service, jobs can be found ranging from information technology, aviation, management, health care and manufacturing production to traditional combat-arms careers.

  1. U.S. Army

    • The U.S. Army offers more 150 career tracks. Categories include: Administrative Support, Arts & Media, Combat, Computers & Technology, Construction & Engineering, Intelligence & Combat Support, Legal & Law Enforcement, Mechanics Medical & Emergency and Transportation & Aviation.

      Within these categories some of more interesting are:
      --Media Illustrator: This work relates to the development and production of various Army-oriented publications, promotional materials and manuals on a recurrent basis.
      --Public Affairs Broadcast Specialist: This work relates to the development, production and broadcast delivery of regular Army-focused media content.

    U.S. Navy

    • The Navy breaks down its career categories based on enlisted versus officer career tracks. These include 28 enlisted tracks, 13 officer tracks and also offer an additional qualified four-year degree career track for both enlisted service members and officers. This last series offer 28 tracks.

      Various Navy job descriptions include:
      --Oceanography/Meteorology: This job directly affects sea-going capabilities throughout the Navy. Being able to analyze and project various weather-related impacts are critical to the safety of maritime operations.
      --Food, Restaurant & Lodging: Various Navy fleets operate on six-month operational cycles.     U.S. Marine Corps

    • As this country's immediate ready-force in time of conflict, the Marine Corps focuses on its core job capabilities--fighting wars. As a result, the Corps offers three job categories: the Ground Combat Element, Logistics Combat Element and Aviation Combat Element.

      According to the Marine Corps, some of more important job descriptions include:
      --Ground Element-Artillery: Disrupt, deny or divert the enemy using cannons, rockets and missiles. Help integrate all fire-support assets into combined arms operations.
      --Aviation Element-Air Traffic Control, Air Support and Anti-Air Warfare: Control air traffic and vehicles within an airport, expeditionary airfield or remote landing site. Provide early warning and air- intercept control. Direct air operations in support of ground forces.

    U.S. Air Force

    • The U.S. Air Force follows a job organization approach that is similar to the Navy, since the force breaks its opportunities out into three tracks: enlisted opportunities, officer opportunities and health-care opportunities. The service offers 86 enlisted tracks, 35 officer tracks and 65 health-care tracks.

      Some of the more unusual and or interesting Air Force jobs are are:
      --Aerospace Physiologist: This discipline is focused on the physiology and psychology of human performance.
      --Premier Band Apprentice: The enlisted member will participate in various musical entertainment programs at the behest of the U.S. Air Force.

    U.S. Coast Guard

    • The U.S. Coast Guard follows the Marine Corps organization approach, since the Coast Guard is entirely focused on domestic maritime operational job categories and descriptions. The Coast Guard offers 19 enlisted, and 8 officer program categories.

      Coast Guard job descriptions include:
      --Boatswain's Mate: This is the most universal job title throughout the service. These enlisted members operate equipment on the boat, all the way up to steering the boat itself.
      --Gunner's Mate: This enlisted rating supports and delivers gunfire support from various Coast Guard vessels.
