Problems With Accutane
Initially developed and still used to treat a number of cancers, Accutane (isotretinoin) is a medication for the treatment of moderate to severe acne. It is often the last prescription treatment for acne, and the flip side of its strength is that it can cause both minor and major problems. Users should talk with their doctors regarding these potential adverse effects.

Birth Defects
-
Accutane is highly likely to cause birth defects during pregnancy. Mental retardation, missing earlobes and visual impairment are common birth defects caused by Accutane. Female patients must start keeping from becoming pregnant prior to two weeks of beginning Accutane, and must be enrolled in iPLEDGE, a program introduced by the FDA in 2005 to help ensure that women do not become pregnant or are aware of the effects of taking the drug if they are already pregnant.
Depression
-
Several studies have suggested a link between Accutane and depression. Additionally, there are varying reports claiming that Accutane has caused suicide. This fact is contested on both sides, however, based on normal suicide rates and the underreporting of suicide rates on both sides of the argument. Studies suggest an increased risk of clinical depression for those taking Accutane.

Dryness
-
Patients on Accutane commonly deal with dryness of the skin and in a general bodily sense. Dryness of the mucous membranes, lips and skin is common. This extends to the eyes, too, as patients report dry eyes, eye irritation and even conjunctivitis. People suffering these effects on the skin have reported subsequent permanent thin skin, as well.
Infrequent or Rare Effects
-
Patients may experience additional infrequent or rare side effects. Blood levels are monitored, as raised blood glucose levels may occur with Accutane. Fatigue, menstrual complications, inflammatory bowel disease, psychosis and a number of other less common effects are also possible.
Drug Interactions
-
Medical professionals advise against taking Accutane with tetracycline antibiotics, which significantly increases the risk of idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Vitamin A supplements are not advised as well, as they increase the risk of vitamin A toxicity. Patients will be monitored with liver function tests and adverse effects if using with methotrexate, which may increase methotrexate levels and increases the risk of hepatotoxicity.
