Between 1998 and 2013, eMachines sold budget computers. The eMachines brand started out in Irvine, Calif., with the backing of two Korean electronics companies, before the owner sold the company to Gateway, which later sold the company to Acer. When the eMachines brand first hit the market, it was an immediate success due to its low prices, and eMachines became the fourth most popular home PC brand in less than a year after its launch.
The Early Years
Stephen A. Dukker, a former senior vice president of merchandizing at both CompUSA and Computer City, founded eMachines in 1998. Dukker's company was co-owned by Korea Data Systems and TriGem Computer Inc. until 2004, when it was purchased by rival manufacturer Gateway. Gateway continued to produce eMachines-branded computers through 2007, when Gateway was in turn bought out by Acer.
EMachines Under Acer
Between 2007 and 2013, Acer continued selling the eMachines line of computers alongside Gateway-branded and Acer-branded machines. In 2013, however, Acer dropped the eMachines brand. Since then, no new eMachines have entered the market, but Acer continues to produce Gateway computers. Despite the brand's death, the eMachines website remains online to provide existing customers with support and replacement accessories.
