Objectives of Goal Setting

Everyone has a goal in mind, but not everyone writes it down on paper. The act of spelling out a tangible goal and deciding how to achieve it can be more powerful than you think. It can quickly put you on a path to the success you've thought about for years.

  1. Identify Specific Goals

    • The first objective of goal-setting is to clearly identify what you want to accomplish and create the motivation to make it happen. Think about the achievement you seek until you can write it in a simple positive sentence.

The goal could be something as simple as a set of errands and chores you need to accomplish. Maybe it's a career goal, one that could take months or years to achieve.

Either way, hang it up on the refrigerator, post it to your computer, or put it somewhere you won't miss it. Now your goals are staring you in the face. By setting these goals, writing them down and putting them somewhere you'll constantly be reminded of them, you've created an extra incentive to make them happen.

    Strategize

    • The next objective of goal-setting is to identify a path toward attaining your goals. This means setting newer, smaller goals. If you are ultimately seeking a career goal, what specifically can you do to make it happen? Can you set a new sales goal for yourself? Work extra hours? If it's a personal fitness goal, give yourself deadlines to improve aspects of your performance.

      Whatever you do, be specific.

    Identify Obstacles

    • The process of goal-setting also helps you identify obstacles that can block your accomplishment. It might be something you've never thought of before. Maybe it's a reality you've been unable or unwilling to face.

Or maybe you just don't have enough gas in the car to run your errands.

Either way, this process will get you thinking about anything that could stand in the way.

    Adjust ...

    • Now that the obstacles have been identified, goal-setting gives you a chance to adjust. Perhaps your goals are unrealistic? Maybe they'll take longer than you thought. If you put too much pressure on yourself and set goals that you know you won't be able to achieve, you're likely to feel disillusioned and give up. Not only will you pass on this set of goals, you may not even begin the goal-setting process for the next set.

    ... But Don't Compromise

    • Only you can decide if a goal is too unrealistic, or if it's something you'll be able to achieve. Don't give up on yourself just because someone else does. If it's a tough goal, but one that you want to keep working toward, acknowledge that to yourself. Then keep working on it, looking at that goal every day. Because that's the ultimate objective of goal setting: reminding yourself not to give up.
