Roughly 90 percent of all women have cellulite, regardless of their weight, physical shape and health, according to a 2005 ABC News report about the condition. Cosmetic companies manufacture cellulite-reduction products and spas offer body wraps to smooth out the "cottage cheese" look. However, cellulite reduction treatments had not achieved significant success rates until TriActive laser therapy for cellulite was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Causes of Cellulite
Medical professionals can easily identify cellulite---fat deposits that accumulate and lie below the skin's surface, causing populous and uneven "dimples" in the skin's texture---but there is no proven cause of the condition, says MedicalNewsToday.com. The website says there is a correlation between weight gain and the amount of visible cellulite. Yet women who are thin and fit still get cellulite, regardless of fitness efforts. These cases indicate genetics as a contributing factor.
Hormones can also contribute to the presence of cellulite, reports MedicalNewsToday.com, with thyroid hormones, insulin and estrogen among the hormones affecting "cottage cheese" accumulation. Other theories suggest that remaining in a standing or sitting position for too long or wearing undergarments that affect skin circulation results in more cellulite.
Triactive Laser Technology
According to the Fitness Equipment & Health website, TriActive laser therapy combines a massaging motion, suction and a cooling factor to reduce cellulite. TriActive uses a technological feature called "class 1 laser diodes," the site says, to penetrate deep into the skin tissue, down to the fat pockets. Rhythmically circling the skin tissue, the lasers combine contact cooling with their massage function to break up the fat deposits and increase circulation. These combined functions also hydrate the skin, the website says, and stimulate restoration throughout the skin tissue, which reduces the uneven texture and appearance of dimples in the skin.
Treatable Skin Areas
The typical trouble areas for cellulite are the upper thighs and bottom. However, TriActive patients also use the laser therapy for the midriff and upper arms, Fitness Equipment & Health reports, particularly in cases of recent dramatic weight loss, or, conversely, dramatic weight gain. A smaller TriActive device was developed for treatment of the face and neck, and its ability to hydrate and smooth skin texture make it a treatment for wrinkles as well. It is regarded as safe enough to treat virtually any skin area where cellulite production has occurred or is possible, the website says.
Reported effectiveness has varied widely. The 2005 ABC News study on cellulite treatment reported minimal effects of TriActive on cellulite reduction. However, compared to other products and treatments tested in the study, TriActive yielded the most affect, the site says. Fitness Equipment & Health reports high success rates from patients, who claim substantial reduction of cellulite appearance after multiple TriActive laser sessions. Beyond its FDA approval, TriActive has earned a strong reputation in Hollywood, the website says, as well as other high-end markets, for firming the skin.
No side effects have been reported for TriActive laser therapy. According to the FDA, the treatment is totally safe. Patients experience no pain, and there is no downtime. Because of the massage-like motion conducted throughout treatment, it is common for the experience to be described as relaxing, according to the Fitness Equipment & Health website.
Unlike laser therapy procedures for other skin conditions, which require only one or a few sessions for effectiveness, TriActive laser treatment for cellulite requires 15 to 20 sessions for visible results, Fitness Equipment & Health says. The average price per session is $150, but most TriActive providers offer a volume discount to patients who purchase a series of sessions during one transaction.
