The thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, helps regulate the body's metabolism. For those with low thyroid activity, also known as hypothyroidism, medical professionals, including the Mayo Clinic, regularly prescribe synthetic thyroid hormone replacements in the form of pills taken daily. Many vitamins and minerals are relevant to thyroid function, although the website MyThyroid.com states there is no evidence that they will help increase thyroid function.

    Iodine

  1. Iodine deficiency may contribute to hypothyroidism. According to the Mayo Clinic, taking an iodine supplement will not promote better thyroid function, and iodine deficiency must be severe to affect the thyroid. Daily iodine intake should be about 600 micrograms, as an overabundance of iodine also may inhibit thyroid activity.

L-Phenylalanine and L-Tyrosine are critical to thyroid function, and deficiencies may impair the thyroid's ability to produce hormones, according to Progressive Health, a natural health organization. L-Phenylalanine is needed to produce the amino acid L-Tyrosine, and low levels are associated with hypothyroidism. The recommended dosage of L-Tyrosine is 500 mcg two to three times per day. Do not take L-Tyrosine if you are already taking thyroid replacement pills or if you have high blood pressure.

  5. B vitamins are critical to the production of energy, mood, nervous system function and wound healing. Vitamins B2 (riboflavin, 10 mcg), B3 (niacin, 10-25 mcg) and B6 (pyridoxine, 5-15 mcg) are all involved in thyroid activity. Fatigue is a key symptom of an underactive thyroid, and while taking a B vitamin supplement is not a "cure" for hypothyroidism, it may treat the symptoms and help improve energy levels, according to TheNaturalHealthPlace.com.

On TheNaturalHealthPlace.com, the list of thyroid-friendly supplements many trace elements and minerals that are involved with thyroid function, including magnesium, potassium, selenium, sodium and zinc. The recommended dosage of selenium is 200 mcg per day, while recommended daily dosages of magnesium, potassium and zinc are 30-50 mcg.

  9. The natural health community also recommends taking a multivitamin that includes key vitamins and minerals related to thyroid production. Such a product should include vitamin C (1,000 mcg a day), which promotes healthy thyroid function.
