The History of Body Sculpting

Body contouring, or body sculpting, is the process of changing the body's shape. This can be done through exercise or surgery or a combination of the two. Body contouring is something a person usually takes part in when he becomes dissatisfied with the shape of his body. In some cases, people might choose to undergo surgery for medical reasons. Body contouring through plastic surgery, for cosmetic reasons, is popular in densely populated areas like Los Angeles and New York.

  1. History

    • For most of our history, human beings have saved lives and promoted health through the use of surgery. This has ranged from early amputations of diseased limbs to the surgeries of the last century, which have sought to heal or improve the body's function internally. This century has also seen the rise of cosmetic surgery, or body sculpting. Instead of healing, this type of surgery seeks to enhance physical characteristics. These cosmetic surgeries consist of unnecessary procedures, done only to increase a person's physical attractiveness.

    Plastic Surgery

    • If plastic surgery is being used to contour the body, there are several options. Liposuction allows the surgeon to sculpt specific areas of the body. The surgeon targets fat deposits and uses a suctioning device to permanently remove fat cells from that area. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical process that tightens abdominal muscles while removing skin and fat. Lifts like this can be done to the entire body. Body implants are used to enhance and shape the body's contour. The most popular implants are breast implants, though cheek, calf, gluteus maximus and arm implants are also available.

    Exercise

    • Body sculpting can also be done through exercise. Body contouring through exercise means following a set of specific movements, which are designed to target certain areas of the body. These targeted movements smooth problem areas and add muscle definition. Body sculpting classes usually consist of activities like boxing, circuits, sports drills, cycling, treadmills, Pilates and FreeMotion. Classes often alternate cardiovascular exercises with these body sculpting techniques. Other techniques in body sculpting exercises are the use of sculpting bands--rubber bands that add resistance--and weights.

    Significance

    • Although men take part in body contouring as well, many people believe that plastic surgery and body contouring are a manifestation of women seeking to please society through their appearance. American society is often body conscious, so body sculpting is often used to increase self-esteem and job potential rather than for health reasons.

    Considerations

    • Anyone considering plastic surgery as an option should consider all the facts beforehand. Body sculpting methods like liposuction can case harm to the body, so the patient should always discuss the process in detail with his doctor. As with any surgical procedure, there are dangers involved with anesthesia and the disruption of the body's function. People with firm, elastic skin and who are in good health are the best candidates for body sculpting through plastic surgery.
