Mycophenolate Mofetil Side Effects

Mycophenolate mofetil is a prescription medication that is used, alongside various other medicines, to make sure that the body does not attack and reject organ transplants (like heart, liver, and kidney). The medicine is classified as being an immunosuppressant. Mycophenolate mofetil functions by decreasing the immune system activity of the body. There are some side effects that could happen from using Mycophenolate mofetil.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • The medication can bring upon several common side effects, which tend to be minor. These side effects are seen as minor due to the fact that they usually subside very quickly as the body gets used to the medication. However, if you are experiencing any of these side effects, and if they continue to get worse, or are very persistent, you need to inform your doctor of the situation. These common side effects are difficulty sleeping, backache, anxiety, nervousness, constipation, headache, appetite loss, diarrhea, coughing, tremors, stomach upset, vomiting, weakness and exhaustion.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Many serious side effects are possible with use of Mycophenolate mofetil. If any are experienced, call for emergency medical help as soon as possible. These potentially dangerous side effects include abnormal bleeding or bruising, extreme dizziness, headache or blurry vision, abnormal or lingering weakness or fatigue, vomiting up blood, vomit that resembles coffee grounds, strange growths or lumps on the skin, urinary tract infection (UTI) signs (frequent or painful urinating), abnormal loss of weight, decrease or increase in amounts of urine produced, bloody urine, bloody or dark stools, tingling, swelling, or numbness of the feet, ankles, legs, arms, or hands, shortness of breath, infection signs (like sore throat, chills, or fever), swollen glands, extreme throwing up or stomachache, dizziness, mood or mental changes (such as unusual thoughts), night sweats, lower stomachache, lower backache, chest pounding, chest ache, fainting and irregular heartbeat.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Some people might experience serious allergic reactions due to taking Mycophenolate mofetil. These reactions can be harmful, and as a result, call for immediate medical assistance. Some signs of allergic reaction to the medicine are the tongue, mouth, lips, or face becoming swollen, rash on the skin, itchiness, breaking out into hives, trouble with breathing, and tightness within the chest.

    Caution

    • It is vital to be careful when considering taking this medicine. Inform your doctor of any allergies or medical conditions that you might have, particularly if you have or have had kidney disease, stomach ulcer (or any other kind of intestinal or stomach disorder), fungal, bacterial, or viral infection, Kelley-Seegmiller syndrome, and Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. These medical conditions could make it so that you are advised against taking Mycophenolate mofetil, or you might simply need dose adjustments or testing beforehand.

    Overdose

    • Overdosing on Mycophenolate mofetil can lead to severe consequences. If you suspect that you might have taken too much of the medication, you need to get emergency medical assistance as soon as possible, for safety purposes. Some symptoms of Mycophenolate mofetil overdose include nausea, throwing up, abnormal bruising or bleeding, diarrhea and various infections.
