Modem Connection & Speed Problems

Connection problems can be a hassle. They can slow work, interrupt video steaming and ruin an online game. In many cases, there is a quick fix, but using the right techniques and good habits can make even the more difficult problems easy. Troubleshooting connection problems and connection speed will make the Internet more efficient and productive.

  1. Understanding Internet Speed

    • Internet connection speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps). This is commonly mistaken for megabytes (MBps). Before troubleshooting connection speed, this is the place to start. Suppose, for instance, that an Internet service provider is offering a 10 meg connection and download speeds are around 1,300 kilobytes per second. If the user thinks the connection applies to megabytes, he might think that there is a problem with the connection, because 1,300 kilobytes is equal to 1.3 megabytes. But because ISPs measure connection speed in megabits, the 1,300 kilobytes is actually equal to the top connection speed of 10 Mbps.

    Inernet Speed Test

    • To check the active Internet connection speed, go to www.speedtest.net. Choose the nearest location on the map and the test will begin automatically. The results will display your current download and upload speeds.

Cable-based ISPs have a limited amount of bandwidth, so connection speed can slow during periods of high traffic. In addition, your Internet speed cannot exceed the maximum bandwidth specified in your service plan.

    Resetting Modem and Router

    • Resetting a cable modem will usually be the solution to Internet problems. To reset a modem, unplug the power for 10 to 30 seconds and plug it back in. Check to see that all the lights turn on. Open up a web page to test it. If resetting the modem does not solve the problem, try resetting the router by unplugging it for 10 to 30 seconds and plugging it back in, just like the modem.

    Calling your ISP

    • Sometimes an ISP can go down for any number of reasons. Call your ISP for information about any problems in your service area. Your ISP can also reset your modem remotely and provide tech support. Your ISP can easily solve problems directly.

    Check Cabling

    • Bad cables can also be the culprit. First, check the coaxial cable connection on the modem. If the cable gets corroded or dirty or is not connected properly, it can interrupt service.

Check Ethernet cables individually by unplugging your router and connecting your PC directly to the modem itself. This can help you decide whether your cables or router is at fault. Each time you replace a cable, your modem needs to be reset.
