Facts on Psychics
Throughout history and in almost every culture, there have always been those recognized for their clairvoyant abilities. Psychics around the world are recognized by various titles--according to culture, time period or geographical location. In the Bible, they are called prophets. Native Americans continue to hold medicine men (shamen) in high regard. Fortune tellers still work at fairs and carnivals while ancient Hindu texts teach that clairvoyance is an ability that can be acquired through meditation, discipline and training. Others lay claim to psychic abilities but are impostors.

It is important to keep in mind that there is no tangible criteria for proving or disproving the existence of extra sensory perception (ESP). Additionally, there is no single explanation regarding how it works. Body, mind and soul healer Rita Louise, Ph.D., says that everyone has psychic ability; it is simply a matter of a person learning to trust her intuition. Some psychics use their ability to communicate with the dead and other inhabitants of the astral realms, while others peer into the future with varying degrees of accuracy. The late Sioux medicine man, Black Elk reportedly had a prophetic and life-altering dream in early childhood (see link in References).

History is filled with reports of sudden clairvoyance--spontaneous moments in which a person is gifted with a profound understanding. Even today, personal accounts speak of a sudden knowing when a loved one has died. The Bible teaches about the predictions of many ancient prophets. In 1555, Nostradamus wrote the first book of his predictions for the next 10 centuries, and Edgar Cayce, who gave his first psychic reading in 1901, is credited with predicting the location of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were found a decade after his death.

Those who do not believe in the existence of psychic phenomena often point to the perceived vagueness with which predictions for the future are often described. In an article titled "Nostradamus (1503-1566)," Robert T. Carroll points out that the seer's words are sometimes altered to suit the desires of "true believers." He is also critical of those who put a modern-day spin upon predictions that were unintelligibly written many years earlier (see link in Resources).

For a person who believes she has undergone a clairvoyant experience, no amount of skepticism will dissuade her. Why then, do some prophecies appear to be inaccurate? According to "Astral Physics and Timespace," the author Montalk discusses a theory that unites space and time, the probable existence of multiple planes of existence, and the likelihood that action of free will opens new possibilities and time lines (see link in Resources). Such speculation offers one possible explanation as to why prophecies do not always come to fulfillment--at least in this physical world.
Considerations

The existence of people viewed as possessing psychic ability has always been with us. While no one can deny the presence of impostors, there are others who appear to genuinely possess these abilities; or at least, have undergone one clairvoyant experience. Perhaps the answer to solving these puzzles lies within each of us. It may be time, as Rita Louise, Ph.D., tells us, to begin trusting in our own intuition.
