Lead Crystal Dangers

It is fairly common knowledge that lead is poisonous, causing a number of health problems in children and adults. People generally only consider the hazards of lead paint in old buildings and houses, and in lead pipes. People are generally less familiar with the dangers of lead crystal, which can contain up to 33 percent lead, and be just as hazardous as any other lead product. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. What is Lead Crystal?

    • Lead crystal is a type of glass containing a combination of lead and crystallized quartz. The process is specifically used to make a glass that is more durable and refractive. The result is a beautifully clear and resilient material, but one that can be hazardous if not used correctly.

    Fragile

    • Though lead crystal is specifically treated to be more resilient, it is still fragile. Take special care when cleaning any lead crystal item. Since even dust can be unusually abrasive on the surface of these containers, always wear gloves when cleaning and polishing your crystal, and polish with a lint-free cloth.

    Leaching

    • Since lead crystal can contain as high as 33 to 38 percent lead, these containers leave you at high risk for lead poisoning when eating or drinking from them. Specifically, acidic liquids can cause "leaching" from lead crystal. Leaching is the process of "dissolving out soluble constituents," in this case lead. Pickles, wine, fruit juices, soda and alcohol are all materials that cause leaching from lead crystal and should never be kept in these containers.

    Minor Illnesses

    • Lead crystal leaching can cause a number of mental and physical problems, and lead to serious traumas. Some minor illnesses that could arise, according to the New York Department of Health, include: fatigue, irritability, impaired concentration, hearing loss, seizures, nausea, colic, dyspepsia, anemia, forgetfulness and memory loss. Also, nausea, depression, fatigue, joint pain, vomiting and abdominal cramping may occur. See a doctor immediately should you experience any of these symptoms if you think you may be at risk for lead crystal poisoning.

    Major Issues

    • Leaching from lead crystal can cause more major health issues as well. In the case of reproductive effects, lead poisoning has been known to cause miscarriages and stillbirths. It has also been known to cause sterility or death in adults in high doses.

    Precautions

    • Purchase ball bearings specifically made to clean lead crystal decanters. Never use harsh commercial cleaners, as there is always a danger of leaching lead chemicals from the container. For this reason never store alcohol in these containers for long periods. To avoid your containers getting dusty, store them in a closed cabinet, and to avoid cutting yourself on lead crystal shards, wear gloves when cleaning up the broken glass after you do.
