Benefits for American Express Centurion

The Centurion Card, also known as the Black Card, was launched in 1999 by American Express and is the company's premium charge card. To qualify, cardholders must have an income of at least $100,000 a year and meet strict credit requirements. They must also have owned an American Express Platinum Card for one year and have charged $250,000 in a one-year period. There is a one-time initiation fee of $5,000 along with an annual membership fee of $2,500.

  1. Concierge Services

    • Centurion cardholders have free access to concierge service at all hours. The concierge can perform tasks such as making travel arrangements, ordering gifts and setting up delivery, and making restaurant reservations. The service is personalized by having the cardholder work with one individual exclusively.

    Purchase Protection and Insurance

    • If items purchased with the card are lost, stolen or damaged within the first 90 days, the cardholder can receive reimbursement. The limit is $10,000 per purchase with a total limit of $50,000 per year. If an item is returned to a retailer within the first 90 days and the retailer refuses to accept it, the cardholder will be refunded up to $300 with a maximum of $1,000 per year. The Buyers Assurance Plan doubles a manufacturer's warranty for up to five years.

    Other Travel Services

    • In addition to travel arrangements, Centurion cardholders receive services covering legal, medical and financial needs while traveling. Travel accident insurance in the amount of $1.5 million is provided. Carry-on bags are insured for up to $1,250, while checked bags are covered for $500 each. Cardholders also receive an annual $100 travel credit that can be used when booking selected vacation packages with the card.

    Hotels

    • Hotel perks are also available. For example, when booking a room at the Ritz Carlton, cardholders will receive an automatic room upgrade and a $50 credit. At the Mandarin Oriental, cardholders get an upgrade when making a reservation, plus an additional upgrade when checking in. They will also receive a coupon that is good for a free night at any Mandarin property.

    Airfare

    • When flying within the United States, cardholders who purchase an airline ticket from one of the six major airlines that totals at least $299 can have a companion fly for free. For international flights, when the cardholder purchases a first class or business class ticket, a companion can also fly for free.
