Book Editing Information

Book editing is the most essential process of the book publishing procedure. A book will not be a success without it, not even when you choose to self-publish. A writer should always edit their work when they have completed the task of writing, and before submitting the written material to a publisher. To make a good first impression of yourself as a writer, you cannot skip over the editing process. Editing makes a book perfect.

  1. From Manuscript to Book

    • Book editing is more than checking your manuscript for grammar and spelling errors. Having a book that you think is publishable means that your paperwork will go through more than just the proofreading stage when it is in the hands of an editor. So, when you are finished with the writing process--dotting the last "i" or crossing the last "t" on your manuscript--this is when the heavy work will begin.

    Making a First Good Impression

    • When looking over your writing, it is wise to make sure that all of your information, such as dates and addresses, are correct, especially if you are creating a nonfiction book. It is also very important to follow the writer's guidelines that a publisher sets forth. You must make sure you are within the word count and using the correct manuscript format that they request. Following the writer's guidelines will ensure that the publisher keeps your work on their desk and not toss it in the slush pile. Making a good impression of your work is a must from the beginning to even get to the book editing process set forth by a publishing house.

    Three Ways to Edit

    • There are several forms of editing that will complete the book editing process. Most editors will take your draft and put it through the developmental editing process. They may also do substantive editing as well as proofreading your manuscript before it is ready to go to print. Each editing procedure is different. Developmental editing is making sure your content is clear, concise and organized. Substantive editing will go over style, structure and content flow of the book, as well as checking reference and resource information. The last process is proofreading, where spelling and grammar are checked.

    Your Book Project

    • Today, books are being published in all kinds of formats. You have e-books, paper backs, hard copies, and books on disc. You can publish your own work as in self-publishing. You have the choice of trying to get accepted by a publishing house, where they assign an editor to your writing project. However, when you self-publish, it is up to the author to weed out the errors and have a clean copy to create a book. A book must be perfect from front cover to the back and the content in between. All in all, you must have a completed manuscript draft to go into the book editing process.

    The Importance of Book Editing

    • The importance of book editing is to guarantee that the material is clear and consistent. The object of the book is to hold the reader's attention; this will happen when the reader isn't jumping over errors and pausing at mistakes as they try to comprehend what the author is saying. Book editing makes for excellent books with error-free content.
