Dog Stomach Ulcer Symptoms

An ulcer in a dog is a sore on the skin or on a mucous membrane inside of the dog's body. Most dog ulcers are small areas of erosion along the intestinal lining inside of the dog's stomach. These ulcers are commonly caused by the excess stomach acids.

  1. Vomiting

    • When a dog vomits it may not be out of the ordinary. If the dog vomits every once in a while, it is most likely not a huge deal. However, if it becomes common and filled with strains of blood, the dog may be suffering from an ulcer and an examination is needed.

    Weight Loss

    • A dog will rarely turn down food unless something is wrong. If the dog has a temporary loss of appetite, it may not be a huge deal. If the lack of eating lasts longer than two days, there may be a serious problem.

    Anemia

    • If your dog has anemia, it can be a symptom for an ulcer. An anemic dog has iron deficiency. This condition is rare and can be caused by malnutrition or hookworm infestations.

    Lethargy

    • If you have an active dog, you will most likely notice when something is wrong. The dog may slow down and become lethargic. This may be a cause of many problems, so it's important to get the dog checked out.

    Dark Black Stool

    • If the dog is having issues with bowel movements, it may be a sign of an ulcer. If the stool is black and tar-colored, it may be caused by the ulcer's bleeding. It is important to bring the dog in right away before the bleeding gets worse.
