Theory of Psychic Ability
Psychic ability, and just how real it is or isn't, has been an ongoing debate in the scientific community for many years. These strange, sometimes phenomenal abilities that people possess cannot always be recorded or monitored, and so giving them credence is hard to do. On the other hand, science knows so little about the untapped potential of the human mind that dismissing psychic ability, particularly the kind that has been witnessed by people, is hard to do.

Psychic
-
A psychic is defined as a person who is sensitive to psychic forces. The word psychic can also be defined as dealing with things that are reflecting, influenced by or within the human mind. Therefore, psychic ability relates to, or comes from, a person's mind.
Theory
-
It's a well-regarded scientific fact that human beings use a relatively small percentage of their brains---thought to be around 10 percent. The current, dominant theory of where psychic ability originates is somewhere in the other 90 percent of the human mind.

Development
-
Many people who have developed a psychic ability have done so by having their minds or perspective changed. Stories of those who have developed psychic abilities after injuries to their head are one example, as are children naturally developing psychic abilities as their brains grow and shift. Dedicated members of many religious sects claim that when they reach a certain state of mind, they are capable of extraordinary feats of endurance, healing or even levitation. While many people believe in this type of phenomenon, there is little hard evidence of it in the scientific community.
Balance
-
Another theory of the origin of psychic ability is that it stems from a perfect balance between the two hemispheres of the brain---as the left side is logical and the right side is home to imagination and creativity.
Types of Psychic Ability
-
Psychic ability is a huge, catch-all title for a variety of unusual talents. Precognition (the ability to see events before they happen), telepathy (communicating directly from one person's mind to another), psychometry (divining information about events or people through items that they've touched), and clairvoyance (knowing about an occurrence through some sense other than the traditional five senses) are all different types of psychic ability. However, how they are caused and how gifted a person is with her particular ability are questions that still have no definitive answers.
