Pros & Cons of a GED

If you are a student considering dropping out of high school and taking your GED, it is important to thoroughly think about the pros and cons of doing so before making such a serious decision. Depending on the state you are in, you may also need to discuss with your parent or guardian the pros and cons of the GED in order to get parental consent.

  1. Pro: Second Opportunity

    • Whether you dropped out because you did not like school or you left for another reason, such as medical reasons, getting your GED can be a second opportunity to taking a step in furthering your education.

Con: Not Accepted By All Schools or Businesses

    • Many, but not all, universities and colleges accept the GED. More often than not, you will be able to get into a community college but depending on the other institutions you are applying to, it may be a bit more difficult to get accepted. When applying for a job, the business may not accept, or may not be willing to accept, a GED.

Pro: More Money in the Future

    • The majority of jobs require that you have a high school diploma or at least a GED in order to even be considered for a position. If you choose to drop out and get your GED, you increase your chances of making more money. Without it, it can be more difficult to even find a job in the first place.

    Con: GED is Difficult

    • The GED is not simple and neither is the process of getting to the point where you are ready to take it. The GED takes more than seven hours and is comprised of five tests. Unfortunately, even though some dropouts claim they will take the GED, they end up not taking the test at all.

    Pro: Improved Self-Confidence

    • When you drop out of high school, you may not feel completely comfortable or confident telling people that you have done so. Even for yourself, you may feel as though the GED can help improve your confidence, and it may very well do that. Getting your GED could help you feel more confident, not only in yourself as a person, but in your future as well.

    Con: Missed Opportunities and Experiences

    • Once you leave high school, you may not be able to go back. You may miss the school functions and the schedule, along with the experiences that you cannot get back once they pass.
