Typical Computer Problems
Computers are much like any other electronic device. However, they are made up of many smaller components that allow them to function. This gives them an even greater chance of having problems, with both hardware and software. On the positive side, most computer problems are common and have simple solutions.

Not Enough Hard Drive Space
-
If you need more drive space, you have two basic options. The first is to free up some hard drive space. This can be done by deleting old applications and files that you no longer use. However, this does not let you regain a lot of space unless you delete some large applications or numerous media files. The second option is to upgrade your hard drive. Hard drives have become much more reasonably priced in recent years. Depending on your storage needs, they have hard drives from 40 GB all the way up to 2 TB in capacity.
Slow Performance When Using Multiple Applications
-
The second-most-common computer problem is slow performance, especially when running multiple applications. Upgrading your computer's RAM is the best solution to this problem. By upgrading the RAM, your computer will have more multitasking power. More RAM will give your computer more "instant memory" to launch programs and help them run more efficiently. Most computers can handle up to 4 GB of RAM.

Spyware and Malware
-
By using the Internet, a computer can pick up numerous spyware and malware infections. If not treated for a long period of time, it can really slow down a computer and affect performance. The good thing is that it costs no money to get rid of spyware and malware. Numerous anti-spyware applications that are completely free are available online. One recommended application is Spybot Search & Destroy.
Viruses
-
Most viruses do one of three things: corrupt your files, infect your operating system or destroy everything on your computer. There are many choices for antivirus software. Most of them cost money to buy. Also, if you want to keep up to date with the latest viruses, you will be required to pay a yearly fee as well. Two common antivirus software applications are Norton and McAfee.
Slow Performance Because of Software
-
To fix slow performance caused by background applications, adjust which programs your computer starts up with. To do this, click the start menu and select "Run." In the text box, type the command "msconfig"; this will bring up a configuration window. You should see a box with the words "Selective Startup" next to it. Click the box to put a check mark in it, and select the startup tab. Within the startup tab, you will see a list of all applications that start up every time your computer starts up. You will need to uncheck some of these boxes to limit the programs that will start up with your computer from now on. It is important to leave all official Microsoft programs checked. Anything else you can uncheck using your own discretion.
