Types of Dog Beds

Keeping dogs out of your bed isn't as easy as it sounds. Just like humans, man's best friend craves a comfortable and soft place to sleep when given the option. Rather than relegating your pet to the foot of the bed or the floor, consider investing in a pet bed. With a wide array of styles and designs, your pet can lounge in comfort.

The most common type of dog bed is the standard pillow bed. Pillow beds are usually square or rectangular, though some manufacturers offer round pillows. Pillow beds are filled with either foam or cotton filling that provides added cushion. Beds of this type are reasonably priced and you can buy them at most retailers that offer pet supplies, including your local super center. When shopping for a pillow bed, look for one that's roughly twice the size of your dog so he has plenty of room to stretch out in comfort. Also look for a bed that's well made and has a removable cover for easy washing.

Much like their human counterparts, dogs' joints tend to get stiff with age. They have more difficulty getting up or even getting around. Orthopedic dog beds are designed for the older pet who needs a little more cushion than younger dogs. These pet beds are much thicker than the basic dog pillow bed. Some versions offer memory foam technology for added comfort and are usually covered in fleece or a similar material. Orthopedic dog beds are great for dogs with hip problems, and you can buy ones with removable covers.

    Couch Beds

    • Pets who like to lounge in style will appreciate the plushness of a couch bed. Based on the design of the living room sofa, these beds look great, and provide comfortable sleeping and support for your pet regardless of his age. Couch beds are usually made for smaller breeds, though some companies do offer a small selection for medium- to large-sized pets. While these beds don't generally have removable covers, it is possible to purchase a slip cover that fits right over the bed to protect it from wear and tear.

    Raised Beds

Raised beds are becoming more and more popular, especially with shelters and kennel owners. Raised beds come in many different styles can be used in conjunction with a pillow or by themselves. Raised beds are nice for pets who have difficulty getting up off the floor or for pets who live in drafty homes. They are also ideal for shelters, because they help pets living in a confined area stay off the floor.

    Kennel Beds

    • Lots of owners use portable crates and kennels when traveling with their pets. Other owners have a crate set up at home to keep dogs from wrecking the house while they are out. The floors of these crates and kennels are plastic and very uncomfortable for a dog to spend long periods of time on. Specialized beds are made to fit each size of crate and kennel to provide your pet with a bit of comfort while confined.
