Every version of "Dragon Quest" contains the same basic gameplay and story line. The "Dragon Warrior" title only was used in North American versions of the game. The Super Nintendo remake, "Dragon Quest I & II," was released exclusively in Japan. This version featured slightly more detailed graphics. The Game Boy Color version primarily was a port of the Super Nintendo version of the game. It was released in North America and Japan. The English translation of the game was redone to be closer to the original Japanese dialogue.
Why Do I Take Damage Walking on the Map?

There are two types of map squares that cause damage when walked on. Swamp squares cause two points of damage for each step taken on one. Barrier squares, which are squares with diagonal lines across them, cause 20 points of damage for each step taken on one. Equipping Erdick's Armor renders the player immune to taking damage from swamp or barrier squares.

The equipment system in "Dragon Quest" is a linear progression. The weapon, shield or sword with the highest bonus is the best choice. The best equipment purchasable from shops is the Flame Sword, Magic Armor, and Silver Shield. All three can be purchased in Cantlin. The Magic Armor heals one point of health for every three steps taken while it is worn. The best weapon in the game is Erdick's Sword in Charlock Castle. The best armor is Erdick's Armor in Hauksness. Erdick's Armor heals one point of health for each step taken and renders the player immune to taking damage from swamp or barrier squares. There is no upgrade to the purchasable Silver Shield.
How Do You Get Erdick's Armor?

Erdick's Armor is in the southeast area of Hauksness. There is a forest square next to a swamp square. Step on the forest square to start a fight with an Axe Knight. Use the Search command after winning the fight to get Erdick's Armor. Do not move until after using Search. If you leave the square before getting the armor, you have to fight the Axe Knight again.
How Do You Get Erdick's Sword?

Get Erdick's Armor before attempting to get Erdick's Sword. Go west once you enter Charlock Castle. Ignore the two staircases. Search the tiles behind the throne to open a secret passage. Cast "Radiant" once you enter the passage. There are no turns to worry about until basement level 3. On basement level 3, go west at both forks to reach the stairs. On basement level 4, go east at the fork. Ignore the first set of stairs you see. Head south and follow the path to a set of stairs going back up. There are no more turns to worry about at this point. Follow the path until you are back at basement level 2. You will come across a chest. Open it to get Erdick's Sword.
