Define Spyware

Spyware is an infectious program that can gain access to a user's computer through free programs or unsecured websites. The infection works to steal a user's personal information. If you visit the Internet frequently, be sure that you install an anti-spyware program. Once a computer has been infected, the user will see annoying pop-up ads on the computer.

  1. Function

    • Once a user's computer has been infected with spyware, the computer will operate slower than usual. Users may also see unwanted toolbars install on their computer. These toolbars are usually installed when users install freeware programs that contain spyware programs. Spyware can also affect the user's Internet browser's original display settings. Spyware infections will also affect the computer's registry settings.

    Features

    • The most annoying feature of spyware is the pop-up ads that are displayed on a user's computer. The ads attempt to trick the user into believing that the ads are legitimate Windows ads. The ads are displayed in an effort to persuade the user into believing that they are advertising products to rid the system of spyware so that when the user clicks on them, their personal information, such as, credit card numbers are stolen.

    Prevention/Solution

    • The best way to prevent spyware programs from causing serious damage to a system is to install an anti-spyware program. Websites like pctools.com offer free downloads that will scan a user's computer for spyware and remove the infectious files. Anti-spyware programs will also monitor the computer and prevent any other attacks.

    Warning

    • If a computer has been infected with spyware an anti-spyware program should be used immediately to clean the computer. If the spyware is not removed, it could cause serious damage to the system's components, such as the CPU. The CPU will operate at speeds that exceed the normal rates. If a computer is infected, it is also best to not access any websites that request personal information since it can be stolen by hackers.

    Misconceptions

    • Anti-spyware programs work best to protect a computer from spyware. Many users believe that an anti-virus program will fight against spyware but spyware and anti-viruses are different. Spyware is usually hidden in online ads and freeware programs and anti-spyware programs are designed to combat these programs.
