Resources That Can Be Recycled

Recycling is the process of turning used materials into new products, while reducing the consumption of raw materials and the pollution caused by manufacturing new products from virgin materials. Today, recycling is part of our everyday lives. Recycling is easy, as long as you know what resources you can recycle as part of a curbside recycling program or by dropping them off at the nearest center.

  1. Plastic

    • Most plastic products can be recycled, but you need to know what types of plastics your recycling center will accept. Every plastic product is marked with a code. The code is a triangle made of arrows--with a number between 1 and 7 in the middle of the triangle--on the bottom of the container. This code must match the list of plastic products your recycling center is able to recycle. Many plastic containers, such as milk jugs, squeeze bottles and laundry and dish-washing detergents are not redeemable for cash, but many recycling facilities will accept them. Plastic water and soft drink bottles are redeemable for cash and accepted by all recycling facilities.

    Glass

    • Glass beer bottles and soft drink bottles are redeemable for cash and accepted by all recycling facilities.Glass jars are also recyclable, but must be separated by the color of the glass. Glass from windows, light bulbs, mirrors, tableware, Pyrex dishes or cars must be separated from other types of glass. Wash all glass containers and remove lids, but leave labels on.

    Tin Cans

    • Tin cans for soup, vegetables, fruits and pet food are recyclable and accepted by many recycling facilities. Rinse cans and put the lids inside. You also can recycle empty aerosol cans after you remove plastic lids.

    Aluminum

    • Many aluminum cans are redeemable for cash and accepted by all recycling facilities, especially aluminum beverage cans. Don't crush aluminum beverage cans ,so they can be easily identified by the recycling facility. Clean aluminum foil, aluminum cooking pans and other aluminum food containers have no cash value, but they are widely accepted and able to be recycled. Unlike other metals, scrap aluminum is also accepted by many recycling facilities.

    Paper

    • Paper is one of the easiest resources to recycle. All paper products must be clean, sorted, not contaminated and dry. You can recycle newspapers, white office paper, magazines, file folders, manila folders, phone books, junk mail and clean cardboard boxes. You don't have to remove staples, and even envelopes with plastic windows are accepted. Greasy pizza boxes, waxed cartons of milk and juice boxes, even without a plastic spout, are not recyclable.
