Parts of a Fire Ladder
When a fire breaks out in a home or business, it is imperative to evacuate as quickly as possible. Since fires can spread faster than one might expect, it is necessary to know the escape route and find the best way to leave. Fire ladders, invented for the purpose of saving lives, can be of immense help in a dangerous situation. Does this Spark an idea?

The Need for Home Fire Ladders
-
Any home should be equipped with an evacuation plan so that everyone can get out the quickest way possible. However, sometimes a door is blocked, a hallway is burning or there is little hope of making it from the third floor to the first floor. In these desperate situations, a home fire ladder can be a life-saving solution.
The Home Fire Ladder

Fire ladders are often recommended for inclusion in home safety kits. These ladders come in various shapes and sizes, and they are often collapsible. For 2- or 3-story homes, they can come with long, nylon straps. Connecting the straps are metal, heat-resistant steps. These ladders can often hold up to 1,000 lbs., so more than one individual might be able to climb down from an upper room at once. The fire ladder connects to a window or railing by means of a strong metal hook. When purchasing a fire ladder, ensure that the width of the hook is greater than the width of the window it will be attached to.

The Need for Firefighters and Firefighter Fire Ladders
-
Just as in any emergency situation, it is important to respond correctly in a fire. Firefighters, trained to think quickly, learn to respond in the best possible way. The National Fire Protection Association advocates a four-step plan, APIE, to properly prepare for emergencies; this is often used for fires. First, Analyze the problem. What is the nature of the fire? Second, Plan the response. How should this incident be handled? Is it necessary to enter the structure, or will firefighting from the street be adequate to extinguish the flames? Third, Implement the plan. While this can be difficult in fast-paced situations, it is important to put a well-planned agenda into work. Finally, Evaluate the progress. Is the strategy working, or is it necessary to change the method in order to achieve maximum safety? For firefighters, fire ladders become an essential piece to almost every step of the plan.
The Firefighter Fire Ladder
-
While fire ladders have been used by firefighters for a long time, it was in 1930 that the aluminum ladder was invented. The Aluminum Ladder Company, at the request of a local fire department, began producing large extension ladders that would be light and easy to lift in the midst of an emergency situation. There are many different types of ladders, but most fire ladders have replaceable rungs and long extensions. Some ladders come fitted with roof hooks to brace in the case of climbing on top of a structure. Other ladders also are equipped with wide leg bases to aid in stability and security while climbing.
Maintaining Safety

While fire ladders are life-saving devices, they must never be used for other purposes. Young children should be instructed that they are not toys to be played with, and using them in cases other than emergencies could have dire consequences.
