Job Offer Etiquette

Searching for a job is one of the most challenging experiences you can face. Financial pressure from being out of work can bring enormous stress to your family. Competition in today's job market is fierce. The sweet reward comes when you receive the job offer. When you do, it is important to respond appropriately.

  1. Initial Response

    • When you receive a job offer, respond as soon as possible with an acknowledgment that you've received an offer. Be positive, friendly and polite. Thank the company and acknowledge you are interested in the position, if that's true.

If you have already accepted another offer, or you're no longer interested, contact the person who extended you the offer. Thank him for considering you, and speak with a smile on your face. You want to leave a favorable impression with the company, because you may apply for a different position there in the future.

    Time to Decide

    • Find out how long you are allowed to deliberate. Some companies may ask for a quick response. However, most companies will allow you at least three or four days to make a decision.

    In Writing

    • Ask to see the job offer in writing. This should include the job description, supervisor information, salary and benefits. Having the offer in writing helps you to think more clearly and lets you compare it with other offers.

    Another Offer

    • Handling two offers at the same time is tricky. While it's a great problem to have, the situation must be handled tactfully. Communicate honestly with both potential employers. Advise each that you are considering multiple offers

    Saying No

    • If you've received multiple offers, saying no must be handled appropriately. You may find yourself competing for a job there again in the future. Call the person who offered you the job. Advise him that you have accepted another position. Be courteous and friendly. Follow up your phone call with an email that expresses your gratitude for the company's consideration of you.

    A Better Offer

    • You may receive a job offer from another company after you've accepted an offer somewhere else. Once you've accepted an offer, it is too late to change your mind. Once you've committed to an employer, that employer is counting on you to keep your word. Therefore, it is important that you weight your options carefully before accepting a job offer.
