Satellite TV is an alternate to cable or antenna television reception. It can be picked up almost anywhere in the country and is often used by travelers. DirecTV and Dish Network are the two main satellite providers in the United States. In order to receive this type of television you need to install a satellite system. You can perform this easily with the proper installation tools.

  1. Dish Location Tools

    • Finding the proper place for the dish requires specific tools. It is not possible to just sit the dish in any location and have it work. Signals are received from a satellite positioned in the sky. The most common location of these satellites is in the southern sky. The dish must be placed in a site that has an unobstructed view to this. A compass (for direction) or a compass with inclinometer (for elevation) is helpful in pinpointing the right location.

    Pole Installation Tools

    • Placing the satellite antenna or what is commonly called the "dish" is often done with a pole. Use a hole (post, pole or fence) digger to make the hole. Mix quick dry cement and add to the hole. Place the pole in the hole and put a bubble-type strap-on or magnetic pole level on it. The pole must be completely level, so check it and make adjustments as you add dirt in the hole with a shovel.

    Other Mounting Tools

    • Satellite dishes can also be placed on other level and protected areas using the mount supplied. Choose from walls, fences, eaves or roofs for placement. Use a drill to make holes to secure the mount and to insert screws in it. Cover the screws with caulking, particularly if the mount is placed on a roof. Check to make sure the mount is level. There are also specially created mounts you can use without having to drill holes.

    Cable Installation Tools

    • Cutting the coaxial cable is easier and inserting the needed connectors is more securely done when the correct tools are used. Use a cable cutter and stripper to ready the cable for connectors. Attach the connectors using a cable compression tool. If running the cable from the dish to the receiver requires going through walls, you will need the proper drill and bits for this as well.

    Additional Installation Tools

    • Use a signal meter to locate the proper satellite. Assembling the dish will require a wrench and screwdriver, if it is not already put together. Other helpful tools to have are a toner (to check continual DC signal in the cable), flashlight or headlamp (especially when working in attics or other dark areas), additional screwdrivers, stapler, hammer, numerous drill bits and levels. Not all of these items are needed for each satellite TV installation; it will depend on your setup.
