Depending on the type of adoption, expenses can amount to $40,000. Whether adopting domestically or internationally, the range of costs can be daunting to prospective adoptive parents. Fortunately, there are free adoption grants available for people who do not have sufficient funds to adopt.

Requirements

Although there are several organizations that provide adoption grants, each has unique requirements for approval. However, there are common factors most organizations require for qualification. When assessing the adopting parents' financial situation, it must be evident that all resources have been exhausted before applying for the grant. Also, most organizations require that an approved home study be in effect. Requirements for home studies vary from state to state, but they confirm the prospective parents as candidates for adoption through background check, financial reviews, visits to the home and character references, according to Adopt.com.

Non-Specific Adoption Grants

When considering an application, some organizations that do not factor in your religion, gender, race, marital status, creed, national origin or sexual orientation.
The Gift of Adoption Fund offers adoption grants of up to $7,500 for prospective adoptive parents looking to adopt domestically or internationally.
National Adoption Foundation Financial Programs gives grants ranging from $500 to $2,500.
HelpUsAdopt.org is a national nonprofit financial assistance grant program offering $500 to $15,000 grants.

Domestic Adoption Grants

Lifetime Adoption Foundation offers grants of $1,500 to $4,300 to families already approved through their domestic adoption program to contract with Lifetime Adoption Center.
Cade Foundation awards grants of up to $10,000 to families adopting domestically.

International Adoption Grants

Ava's Hope assists prospective parents looking to adopt internationally by raising funds through hosting special events and from private donations to provide adoption grants.
One World Adoption Fund gives grants to couples toward the end of each year, for people looking to adopt internationally.

Religious Organization Grants

Many religious organizations that provide adoption grants are Christian-based, specific to helping Christian prospective adoptive parents.
God's Grace Adoption Ministry, a nonprofit organization, offers adoption grants ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 for Christian families.
Shaohannah's Hope provides adoption grants for prospective parents, through Show Hope, a ministry reaching out to help find loving homes for orphans around the world.
Caroline's Promise gives grants ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 to Christian couples living in North Carolina.

Older and Special Needs Kids Grants

There are several organizations that give out adoption grants that cater only to older or special-needs orphans.
A Child Waits Foundation, a nonprofit charitable foundation, only gives out adoption grants to prospective parents adopting older or special-needs children.
Reece's Rainbow places grants on international orphans, and when they are adopted, the money is used to help the adoptive parents pay for the adoption.
A Child's Desire places grants on orphans with disabilities 8 and older.
Brittany's Hope places grants on orphans that are selected by placing agencies to help them be adopted.
ChinaCare Foundation gives grants ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 for families adopting special-needs or older kids.
Building Families/Lisa's Fund gives grants of $1,000 to $2000 only to families adopting through Dillon International Adoption Agency, mostly children with special needs.
