Registered dietitians work with individuals and groups to prevent and treat illnesses and promote better health. They monitor and plan nutrition, oversee meals and train and instruct others. Dietitians may work in clinical settings, in communities, in management roles of institutions with large-scale meal preparation or in consulting positions for businesses with concerns about nutrition.

In many states, those who have have not completed the required education are not allowed to use the occupational title of dietitian, but may still work under another name that is not regulated by law, such as nutritionist. The credential of registered dietitian is handled separately, awarded by the American Dietetic Association's Commission on Dietetic Registration. For this credential, dietitians must have completed academic coursework and a supervised internship and passed an exam.

The average median salary of dietitians is $50,261. The middle 50 percent of dietitians earn between $45,370 and $55,770. Only the bottom 10 percent earn less than $40,874 and the top 10 percent earn more than $60,743. The value of dietitians total compensation, including bonuses, retirement savings, health-care benefits and time-off, averages $71,085.
