Painting a child's room is a chance to get creative with walls and ceilings. From an infant's nursery to a teenager's room, paint color and design can create a space that is comfortable and inviting to a child. Decorative paint finishes and wall treatments can be applied using a variety of methods. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Murals

    • Paint a mural on a focal wall. The mural can be painted directly on the wall or painted on canvas and applied to the wall similar to wallpaper. A base coat with some sheen or gloss should always be used. Flat paint does not work well as the paint is too dry and absorbs the mural paint too fast. Use a projector to transfer images to the wall. Murals can be landscape scenes, favorite cartoon characters and other images. Remember to paint items that will grow with the child. Neutral images such as trees and flowers are ideal.

    Geometric Blocks

    • Draw a variety of geometric shapes onto the wall using a watercolor pencil. Create the blocks using a level and straight edge. Paint the blocks a variety of different colors. Metallic paint can be added for additional shimmer. Blocks can be outlined in different paint colors for additional dimension and design.

    Stripes

    • Horizontal or vertical stripes can be added to a wall for additional design. Paint stripes in different colors and widths. Stripes can also be painted in the same color, but alternate the sheen level of stripes. For example, purchase blue paint in flat and glossy sheen levels. Vertical stripes will make the room feel taller, while horizontal stripes will give the appearance the room is longer.

    Lettering

    • Add inspirational sayings to a room using paint. Choose a verse from a favorite song or poem. Make a stencil using vinyl or polystyrene. Stencils can be custom made at many vinyl and decal stores that commonly create lettering for cars. Another option is to print the saying as a banner from the computer. Transfer the lettering with tracing paper to the wall.

    Sky Ceilings

    • Ceilings are the fifth wall, and can be transformed into cloud and sky themes. Paint the ceiling a light blue base coat in satin. Add white, lavender and blue paint to create clouds. Clouds can be painted using sponges and paint brushes. Ceilings should ideally be smooth for the best effect; however popcorn and textured ceilings can still be painted. A sky ceiling is a neutral paint effect that will work in an infant's as well as teenager's bedroom.
