- Many different types of illnesses and complications can cause a fever in your dog. Any temperature over 120 degrees Fahrenheit should result in your taking the dog to your vet. To take the temperature, place a cover on a digital thermometer. Dip the covered end into a jar of petroleum jelly. Place just the tip of the thermometer into the dog's rectum. Talk to the dog or give her a treat while the temperature is being registered. Remove the thermometer and dispose of the cover when the temperature registers.
- Bleeding gums is usually a sign that your dog has moderate to severe oral health problems, including an infection. Schedule an appointment with the veterinarian for teeth cleaning and possibly antibiotics. Give your dog plenty of water throughout the day while following your vet's direction for further treatment.
- Constipation could be a result of a change in diet, too little exercise or dehydration. Increase the amount of water you offer the dog. Take her on one or two longer walks than usual and encourage activity by playing games with her . Note any changes in diet. If the constipation doesn't clear up after 24 to 48 hours, call your veterinarian.
- Coughing is never a good sign in dogs. It could be a result of allergies, kennel cough or even Parvo. Do not attempt to give your dog human allergy or cough medications. If your dog coughs, notify your veterinarian immediately. More than likely, you will need to go into the office for tests and treatment.
- Bloody stools are very serious in dogs. Your dog could have internal bleeding, some sort of blockage in the intestines or a disease. Collect the stool in a small plastic bag. Take your dog to the veterinarian office immediately with the stool you collected.
- Blood in the urine could indicate kidney stones, urinary-tract infection or disease. Notify your veterinarian; the staff may ask you to come in that day, depending on any other signs the dog shows of being sick.
