Definition Of Stamina

Defining stamina is simply explaining how durable a person's physical and mental toughness is. There are workouts you can do (both mentally and physically) to increase your stamina and to improve your overall health. If you have the mindset of performing with high stamina and wanting to increase that, you will find the additional mental and physical stamina beneficial.

Definition

  • According to TheFreeDictionary.com, stamina is defined as sustaining energy or strength while working or performing an activity over a long period. It can also be defined as having endurance to withstand an illness, fatigue or a hardship.

Physical Stamina

  • The physical stamina of a person's body will vary depending on the person's age, sex and any conditions, such as physical injuries or medical disabilities. One legitimate way to expand your life is to increase your stamina. Activities that can increase your stamina include weight training, jogging/running, swimming, yoga, trekking and then steadily increasing the length and depth of each workout from week to week.

Mental Stamina

  • Not only can people become physically strong but they can become mentally strong (or mentally tough) too. Performing mental fitness can be described as exercising and conditioning your brain or mind so that it becomes more durable and can think more clearly. Read, do puzzles, learn a new language--these are all ways to exercise your brain.

Benefits of Mental Stamina

  • The brain is similar to a muscle because the more you use it (thinking and brainstorming), the larger and stronger it gets. If you can maintain a consistent physical workout schedule and mental fitness (using your brain more often), you can increase your mental stamina.

Facts of Stamina in Older Adults

  • Stamina tends to decrease as age increases. Strength and stamina will decrease in an older person's life, due to the decrease in their physical activity. One in three men and one in two women who are at the age of 75 do not engage in any physical activity. Most adults who are at 65 years of age consider walking and gardening to be their only physical activities.
