Rules for a Debate Team
Debate teams need several different types of rules, and in order to have a debate team that is successful, rules must be created and followed by all members of the team.
-
Team Members
-
A debate team should have a set or rules that include who the team members can be. This should include the ages and grade levels of the members if the debate team is in a school. You might also have rules about who can be involved according to what they have done. For instance, students who have been in debate for two years cannot be in it again, or students need to take speech class before they can be in debate.
Participation
-
Participation rules might require members to attend a certain amount of practices before they can be eligible to go to a meet. Another rule might require a member to attend 70 percent of all meets in order to continue to be on the team. You might also have participation rules that include rules about what would disqualify someone from participating, such as bad grades or being in trouble with the law.

Practice
-
Many debate teams have rules about practices. These rules include where practices are, and what time they take place. They also include the number of practices that are required for students to attend, and whether students can skip any practices.
Calendar
-
Debate teams also have rules about the dates and times of the meets. Rules can also set the length of the debate season and when there are breaks in the season.
Considerations
-
Consider your teams' requirements when creating debate team rules. Some debate teams might find that they don't need to have certain rules; debate teams that aren't affiliated with a school won't need to have any rules about grades.
