Metoprolol Succer Side Effects
Metoprolol Succer (Metoprolol Succinate ER) is a medication available by prescription only for the treatment of high blood pressure, angina (chest pain) and heart failure. Metoprolol is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca under the brand name of Toprol XL, and was approved by the FDA in 2001. Metoprolol is also used as a treatment for the prevention of heart attacks. Side effects such as weakness, dizziness, lightheadedness and depression are not uncommon among users.

Dosage

Metoprolol is dispensed in 25 to 100 mg doses, and is packaged in a tablet form for oral ingestion. Take this medication exactly as prescribed and don't skip a dose. If you forget to take your dose, be sure to take it as soon as you remember. Take this medication with food or directly after a meal. Never take a double dose as it may cause an overdose. Symptoms of Metoprolol overdose include slow, uneven heartbeat, shortness of breath, fingernails that are turning blue, dizziness and fainting.
Side Effects

A few moderate side effects of this medication are vomiting or nausea, decreased sex drive or impotence, insomnia, anxiety, tiredness or mild depression. Your doctor should be informed if any of these symptoms occur as a result of taking Metoprolol and you may need to be physically examined.

Severe Side Effects

Some side effects associated with Metoprolol are more severe. They include slow, uneven heartbeat, swelling of the ankles and feet or a feeling of being short of breath, as well as feeling faint or lightheaded. If you experience a loss of appetite, have dark colored or bloody urine, a yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice) or feel you are becoming depressed, you may be having a severe side effect as a result of Metoprolol. Seek emergency medical attention if you feel you are experiencing one of these side effects.
Depression

If you have a history of depression, be sure to inform your doctor before taking Metoprolol. If, after you've started taking Metoprolol, you experience trouble sleeping, lack of interest in your normal hobbies, difficulty concentrating or loss of appetite, you might be experiencing depression due to this medication and possibly should change medications.

Continue to take Metoprolol as directed by your doctor. Chest pain, heart attack or uneven heartbeats sometimes occur as a result of suddenly stopping treatment. Take this medication exactly as directed and do not use alcohol while taking Metoprolol. If you are having a surgical procedure, make sure your surgeon knows you are taking Metoprolol (even if it is dental surgery). Taking Metoprolol while suffering from heart failure, heart block or slow heart rate may cause death.
