Dare Drug Abuse Resistance Education

Dare drug abuse resistance education was developed to stop the use of drugs and gang wars. You may have heard people in the community talking about D.A.R.E and thought that it was just another program for kids. The truth is that the program is for everyone, but focuses on kids at an early age.

  1. What is D.A.R.E.?

    • D.A.R.E is an educational program that teaches kids and adults about the prevention of drug abuse. Children around the country participate in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education in school. They learn the skills and knowledge needed to avoid any type of involvement in violence, gangs and drugs. The program was founded in 1983 and is used in more than 75 percent of public schools around the country, and in 43 other countries.

    Who Teaches D.A.R.E.?

    • Police officers from the community lead the presentations and lessons to children in kindergarten through 12th grade. The officers participate in a training session to learn how to present the curriculum and how to answer those tough questions that kids will have.

    Community Policing

    • The program allows kids to relate to police officers as people. They learn that the police are there to help and answer questions. This helps to open the lines of communication between kids and police officers. This program helps open other doors to questions that kids made have unrelated to violence, gangs and drugs.

    Unique Training

    • The program teaches kids how to resist temptation of drug use and resist peer pressure associated with gangs and drug use. Officers and kids relate on a factual basis, but with an emotional hook as well.

    Start a D.A.R.E

    • If you don't have a program already started in your community schools, you can start one by sending a letter of interest to D.A.R.E signed by the Police Chief and the Superintendent of Schools. The selected officers will attend a two-week training course. There is no charge for the training or the learning materials. Send the letter to D.A.R.E., PO Box 512090, Los Angeles, CA 90051.
