Side Effects of Minocyline

Minocycline is a prescription medication that is used for the treatment of a broad range of bacterial infections, such as acne. It is a tetracycline antibiotic, and battles bacteria located within the body. It slows down the growth and spreading of bacteria, and enables the immune system to destroy it. Some side effects are possible due to taking Minocycline.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • Several minor and common side effects of Minocycline exist. These side effects happen frequently to users of the medication, and are believed to be minor since they tend to fade away rapidly. However, if your side effects linger or intensify, inform your doctor. These side effects are appetite loss, skin color changes, sunlight sensitivity, dizziness, feeling lightheaded, whirling sensations, having a hard time swallowing, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and unsteadiness.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects are a possibility with Minocycline use. These possibly harmful Minocycline side effects include weakness of the muscles, muscle ache, joint pain, vaginal discharge or irritation, extreme skin reaction due to the sun, abnormal weakness or fatigue, pancreas inflammation (with symptoms like faster pulse rate, nausea, tenderness of the stomach, and throwing up), peeling, swollen, red, or blistered skin, sores inside of the mouth, swelling, pain, or redness inside of the mouth, extreme diarrhea, stomachache, stomach cramps, headache, hearing loss, bloody stools, blurry vision, discharge of the gums, bleeding of the gums and ringing in the ears. Seek immediate medical assistance if any of these side effects occur.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Serious allergic reactions are a possibility with Minocycline, although not extremely common. They call for emergency medical attention, since they could lead to potentially dangerous consequences. Some signs of allergic reaction to Minocycline are having a hard time breathing, skin rash, itching, hives and chest tightness or heaviness.

    Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women

    • Pregnant women should avoid use of Minocycline, due to the fact that it could cause damage to unborn babies (such as permanent teeth discoloration). Also, nursing females should avoid the medication, since it is excreted inside of human breast milk and could have an effect on the development of the baby's teeth and bones.

    Overdose

    • Overdosing on Minocycline could lead to some serious consequences. If you are worried that you have overdosed on this medicine, get emergency medical attention. Some signs of Minocycline overdose are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
