Fire Pit Ideas

Fireplaces are an outdoor accessory that can be a movable container situated on your patio or a built-in fire pit nestled in your backyard. Fire pits are available in a range of shapes, sizes and colors to match your design. Affordable and weather-resistant fire pits can be used to enjoy evening meals with friends and family or while curling up with your favorite book.

Slate Fire Pit

Create an outdoor fire pit of your desired size using slate. The blue and gray shades found in slate will blend in with the outdoors while providing texture and design to your landscape. At night, the colors will shimmer beneath the fire. To create the fire pit, layer the slate two to three feet high in a circular pattern. The diameter of fire pits are between six and seven feet for a medium-sized pit. Consider the number of people that can sit comfortably around the fire pit before you decide exact dimensions.

Portable Fire Pit

Portable fire pits are an affordable way to update your outdoor space without spending a lot of money. A chimnea, which is made of ceramic material, is a front-loading fire pit with a round body, making this an ideal addition on your deck or patio. Chimneas are light and can easily be moved around the landscape depending upon your preference and space. Place a chimnea on your patio and enjoy an evening roasting marshmallows or enjoying a glass of wine with friends and family.

Fire Bowl

Fire bowls are designed with a top that can be used for outdoor grilling and entertaining. The protective metal top can be removed to display the grill top that you can utilize for cooking. When you're not cooking, keep the dome-shaped, metal top on the fire bowl and enjoy an evening outdoors. Typically, fire bowls are available in bronze and black, ideal colors for blending in with the landscape. Extremely portable, fire bowls can be tucked into a corner on your open deck or placed outside in the yard. During the winter months, they are easily stored in a garage or outdoor shed or used in climates with mild winters. If you happen to relocate, you can always take the piece with you.

Roman Fire Pit

For a bold design, build a Roman fire pit in your backyard. Check your local hardware stores for attractive tiles to use to build the pit. To build the fire pit, dig a hole five feet deep for placing the wood and to contain the fire. Allow at least one foot around the sides for gravel to help secure the Roman fire pit. Install the fire pit into the hole and fill up the sides with gravel. The fire pit should be flush with the ground. Next, use the tiles and build a design around the fire pit lip.

Safety

Do not burn pressure-treated wood in your fire pit due to the harmful chemicals it will emit. Always keep the fires in the pit small to prevent a serious disaster. Before using it, always check your local weather for high winds that would cause a hazard. Check with your city and county to make sure fire pits are legal in your area.
