Job Description for a Taxidermist
A taxidermist is a professional artist who mounts and reproduces deceased animals for the purpose of public display, such as in a museum or monument, or for other sources of scientific study. Many hunters seek out a taxidermist to preserve the animal they've hunted, such as a deer or bear, to use as a sort of trophy for their homes or hunting lodges. The art of taxidermy began in the 18th century when sea explorers returned home from voyages carrying foreign catches from hunting expeditions. They wanted to preserve what they found in the undiscovered seas and territories and created the art to showcase their findings.

Job Responsibilities
-
A taxidermist meets with a client to discuss possible positions he would like to see preserved in the animal. From there, the taxidermist will set a timeline for when the animal will be available and agree on fee for the service. Initially, the taxidermist will remove the skin from the animal using various knives and scissors followed by the administering of a topical solution into the skin for preservation, or tanning as it is known. The taxidermist then measures the bones and muscle fibers to ensure accuracy in the reproduction of the animal. He begins to mold the carcass in plaster to create a mannequin. Glass eyes are installed and the taxidermist reassembles the fur, feathers or scales of the body to recreate a lifelike pose of the animal.

Taxidermy schools exist in most states and offer full-time training in classrooms and local settings. Programs generally run anywhere from six weeks to several semesters, but some communities also offer workshops and conventions. Enrollment in these forms of training offers hands-on experience, often with well-known experts in the art. Some workshops and conventions accept beginners, but most are geared toward those with advance studies and training.
