Problems Attaching Files Through Email
Sending pictures, music and other items through e-mail is perhaps the greatest feature on any e-mail program. However, actually attaching them can be a problem, and if you are not a wizard at troubleshooting your e-mail, things can get quite difficult. Here are few troubleshooting tips to solve this issue.
-
File Size Issues
-
If you are sending a large attachment to a person who is using a web-based e-mail program such as Hotmail or Yahoo!, there is a limit to the size of the files you can send. Usually this limit is 10MB. Many times you will get a message sent back as mail is undeliverable. A good remedy for this is to either compress the files into .zip form or, if possible, send multiple files over multiple e-mail addresses.
Virus Software Executable Files
-
Executable (.exe) files are program applications that perform functions. Most e-mail programs don't allow clients to receive these files because they often are malicious software that may contain a virus or spyware that cane be detrimental to your computer and private files. If you need to share an application, get a virtual server such as rackspace.com or hostgator.com. The files can also be compressed it into a .zip file.

Using a Virtual Server
-
When sending large files, it is best to get a shared virtual server such as iDisk (www.apple.com/mobileme/features/idisk.html), which works for both Mac and PC platforms. To send large print based, graphic files or movie footage, obtain a shared web-based server from a company such as GoDaddy.com and set up a FTP account. Access can be granted to colleagues, friends or family members through password use. This process will allow users to download what they need without a hitch.
E-mail programs
-
The most popular e-mail program is Microsoft Outlook. Follow the instructions for Outlook below to send an attachment (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook).
1. Check the preferences and make sure the e-mail account is not set to separate your attachments. If the receiver does not have the features set to reassemble the divided file, it will appear as garbage.
2. Have your e-mail send options set to HTML. This will allow you to insert images, movie clips and music right into your e-mail document.
Using the reference manual
-
It's always a good idea to consult the user manual to learn all the possible features of the e-mail program. Many e-mail platforms also have websites with a troubleshooting and FAQ guide.
