Kids Cooking Classes in Tualatin, Oregon

The Young Chefs Academy in Tualatin, Oregon, is a franchise operation that offers cooking classes to children ages 3 to 15. Weekly classes, workshops and mini-camps make up a full schedule that also includes field trips and special events for groups. While learning how to cook is the main focus, these centers also focus on math, reading and science skills throughout the lesson plans. Tualatin is located in the northern part of Oregon, 12 miles south of Portland. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. About the Academy

    • The Young Chefs Academy groups children into three age groups. Kindercooks is for kids ages 3 to 6, Jr. Chefs is for kids ages 7 to 10, and Sr. Chefs is for kids ages 11 to 15. Classes for younger children don't last as long and feature easier recipes than classes for older children.

    Skills Learned

    • Children are taught by professional chefs, teachers and nutrition experts. Students learn a variety of skills that are needed for working in the kitchen, including techniques for cooking and baking, how to set a proper table, food presentation and safe food handling. Classes are available for preschool children that allow parents to work alongside their kids.

    Class Schedule

    • Weekly classes are offered in eight-week blocks with three time slots for families to choose from. For instance, the schedule offered for fall 2009 schedule had class on Wednesday afternoons, Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings. Classes focus on multiple-course meals such as chicken sandwiches and salad, or lasagna with mixed vegetables. Weekly classes are available for all three age groups, with age-appropriate menus.

    Special Classes

    • Mini-camps and workshops are offered along with the regular class schedules. Workshops last two hours and can focus on baking, chocolate or a particular theme, as in the case of the "creepy cooking" series that provides menu items for Halloween parties. Mini-camps are classes held over three days andoutline international or regional menus. Once a month, the academy has a three-hour class for both children and their parents. Classes are available for preschoolers and the 7 to 12 age group.

    Prices and Location

    • Prices vary depending on how many classes purchased and whether you are buying single or a series of classes. In the fall of 2009, single classes ranged from $28 to $85. Monthly memberships can be purchased from $79 to $89 per month. Workshop fees are priced accordingly.
